How to find slime chunks

  1. Pick your edition

On Java, enter your world seed (type /seed in chat). On Bedrock, skip it: slime chunks are the same in every Bedrock world.

  2. Enter where you are

Type your X and Z from the F3 screen (Java) or Show Coordinates (Bedrock). The finder lists the closest slime chunks and the map centres on you.

  3. Find the chunk in-game

Every green square is a slime chunk, 16×16 blocks from the corner coordinates listed. In Java, press F3+G to show chunk borders so you can line your farm up exactly.

  4. Dig down below Y=40

Slimes only spawn in slime chunks below Y=40. Clear out a big, flat room there and they spawn at any light level.

Where to find slimes in Minecraft

Slimes spawn in two places:

  • Slime chunks, below Y=40. Any time of day and at any light level. This is the reliable one, and the one this finder shows.
  • Swamps and mangrove swamps at night. On the surface, between about Y=51 and Y=69, when it is dark enough. More spawn when the moon is fuller, and none spawn during a new moon.

Slimes never spawn in Mushroom Fields or on Peaceful. If you only need a few slimeballs, a swamp on a full-moon night is quickest; for a farm, use a slime chunk.

How slime chunks work

The game marks one chunk in ten as a slime chunk. In Java the choice mixes the chunk's coordinates with the world seed, so every world has its own pattern and you need the seed to find them. In Bedrock it only uses the chunk coordinates, so the pattern is identical in every world, Realm and server.

Building a slime farm

  • Look for clusters. Zoom out to spot two or more slime chunks touching: a farm across them spawns far more slimes.
  • Build below Y=40 and stand 24 to 128 blocks away in Java, so slimes can spawn but do not despawn.
  • Light up the caves around you. Other mobs share the mob cap; fewer of them means more slimes.
  • Spawning floors need space: large slimes need a 3×3×3 gap. Use slabs or water to move them to a kill area.

Playing on a server? Slime farms are a staple of SMP servers, and the seed map can show slime chunks on top of biomes and structures.

Slime chunk questions

What is a slime chunk?

One in every ten chunks is a slime chunk. Below Y=40, slimes can spawn there at any light level, which makes them the place to build a slime farm. Slimes also spawn in swamps at night, but slime chunks work all day, underground.

How do I find slime chunks?

In Java, enter your world seed and the finder marks every slime chunk in green. In Bedrock, slime chunks do not depend on the seed, so the same map works for every world. Press F3+G in Java to show chunk borders in-game and line yourself up with a slime chunk.

Are Bedrock slime chunks the same in every world?

Yes. Bedrock works out slime chunks from the chunk coordinates alone, so chunk 0, 0 is either a slime chunk in every Bedrock world or in none. Java mixes in the world seed, so every Java world is different.

Why are slimes not spawning in my slime chunk?

Check that the game is not on Peaceful, that you are below Y=40, and that there is open floor with room for a slime (big ones need a 3×3×3 space). In Java you must stay at least 24 blocks away, and mobs despawn beyond 128 blocks. Other mobs filling the mob cap also stop slimes, so light up or fill nearby caves.

How do I find my chunk coordinates?

In Java, the F3 screen shows the chunk you are standing in. In any edition, divide your X and Z by 16 and round down: block 100, -40 is in chunk 6, -3. Hover over the map to see the chunk under your cursor.

How common are slime chunks?

Ten percent of chunks, scattered at random. Some areas have clusters of slime chunks touching each other, which make the best farms; zoom out on the map to spot them.
