When Minecraft cannot verify your account, multiplayer stops working even if the server you are joining is fine. We check every service a Minecraft login passes through once a minute, so you can see at a glance whether the problem is Mojang and Microsoft or your own setup.

What are the Minecraft authentication servers?
There is no single "authentication server". Since Minecraft moved to Microsoft accounts, a Java Edition login passes through five services in order, and multiplayer only works when every one of them answers:
- Microsoft account (
login.live.com): signs you in. - Xbox Live (
user.auth.xboxlive.com): turns that sign-in into an Xbox Live token. - Xbox security token (
xsts.auth.xboxlive.com): issues the token Minecraft accepts. - Minecraft Services (
api.minecraftservices.com): gives your launcher a Minecraft session. - Session server (
sessionserver.mojang.com): what a multiplayer server asks to confirm you own the account you are joining with.
These are hostnames, not fixed IP addresses. They sit behind Microsoft and Mojang's content delivery networks, so the IP behind each one changes by region and over time. Bedrock Edition uses the same Microsoft and Xbox Live sign-in, but not the Java session server.
Realms runs on its own services on top of this sign-in. If only your Realm will not connect, check whether Minecraft Realms is down for Java and Bedrock.

If the status above is green but you still cannot log in
All checks passing means Mojang and Microsoft are answering. The problem is then usually a stale session or something between your computer and those servers.
Restart the game and the launcher
Quit Minecraft and the launcher completely, not just the game window, then reopen them. This refreshes your session.
Sign out and back in
In the Minecraft Launcher, sign out of your Microsoft account, close the launcher, and sign in again.
Check your clock
Sign-in tokens are time-stamped. Set your device's date, time and time zone to update automatically.
Turn off VPNs and proxies
VPNs, proxies and some antivirus "web shields" can block the sign-in hosts listed above. Turn them off and try again, or allow the launcher and Java through your firewall.
Flush your DNS
An outdated DNS answer can point the game at the wrong address. On Windows, run
ipconfig /flushdnsin Command Prompt, then restart the launcher.Try another server
If only one server fails, that server is probably the problem. Wait a few minutes or ask its staff.
Common authentication error messages
Failed to log in: The authentication servers are currently not reachable. Please try again.
Your game could not reach the sign-in services. If the status above shows an outage, wait for it to recover. If everything is green, restart the launcher, check your clock, and turn off any VPN or proxy.
Authentication servers are down. Please try again later, sorry!
The multiplayer server you joined could not reach Mojang's session server to verify you. Check the session server row above; if it is green, the problem is on that server's network, so try again later or tell its staff.
Failed to log in: The authentication servers are currently down for maintenance.
Despite the wording, this is rarely planned maintenance. It usually means an expired session or a blocked connection. Restart the game and launcher; if many servers show it at once, check the status above.
Failed to login: Invalid session (Try restarting your game and the launcher)
Your sign-in session expired. Fully quit the game and launcher, reopen them, and sign in again.
Failed to verify username!
The server could not confirm your account with the session server. Restart the game and launcher; if many servers show it, the session server is likely having trouble.
Multiplayer is disabled. Please check your Microsoft account settings.
Multiplayer is turned off for the account, often by family settings. An account owner or parent can enable it in the Xbox privacy settings.
For server owners
When the session server is down, an online-mode server cannot verify anyone, so every player who joins is disconnected with "Authentication servers are down". Players who are already connected are usually unaffected. Wait it out rather than switching online-mode to false: offline mode lets anyone join under any username, including yours.
Minecraft authentication server questions
Are the Minecraft authentication servers down right now?
The live status at the top of this page answers that. It is checked from our servers every minute and shows each sign-in service separately, so you can see exactly which step is failing.
How do I check if the Minecraft login servers are down?
Look at the status at the top of this page. If a sign-in step shows an outage, the problem is on Mojang or Microsoft's side. If every check is green, the problem is most likely your session, network, VPN or the specific server you are joining. For one answer covering Java, Bedrock and Realms, see Is Minecraft down?.
What is the Minecraft authentication server address?
Java Edition sign-in uses several hosts: login.live.com, user.auth.xboxlive.com, xsts.auth.xboxlive.com, api.minecraftservices.com and sessionserver.mojang.com. Multiplayer servers verify players with sessionserver.mojang.com. They have no fixed IP addresses because they are served through content delivery networks.
Why does Minecraft say the authentication servers are down when they are not?
The game shows the same message whenever it cannot complete a sign-in, whatever the reason. An expired session, a wrong system clock, a VPN, a firewall or a DNS problem all produce it. Restarting the launcher and signing in again fixes most cases.
Does Bedrock Edition use the same authentication servers?
Partly. Bedrock signs in with the same Microsoft account and Xbox Live services, so an Xbox Live outage affects both editions. The Java session server is only used by Java Edition.
Have the Minecraft authentication servers been down recently?
The recent authentication server outages list on this page shows every sign-in outage and slowdown our checks have recorded, newest first, with the date and time in UTC, the login step affected and how long it lasted.
Can I still play Minecraft while authentication is down?
Yes, singleplayer and LAN worlds work without it, and offline-mode servers do not check accounts. Online servers and Realms need working authentication to let you join.
