What font does Minecraft use?
Minecraft draws nearly all of its text in its own bitmap font: every character is a small grid of square pixels, 7 pixels tall for capitals plus 1 for descenders, with a drop shadow one pixel down and right. The Minecraft Wiki calls it Mojangles, also known as Minecraft Seven; in Java Edition's files it is simply the default font. Its design goes back to Markus Persson's earlier games, and the first version was based on the 8×8 font of IBM's EGA graphics card. In Java Edition, characters it does not have fall back to GNU Unifont.
There is no official download. In Java Edition the font is a set of pixel images inside the game, and Mojang's usage guidelines count Minecraft's fonts and logos as part of its brand. That is why this generator uses a fan-made recreation instead.
The Minecraft logo font
The Minecraft logo is drawn lettering, not a font you can type with. Fan fonts such as MineCrafter imitate its blocky style. For chunky 3D title text in stone, grass or gold, use the Minecraft text generator. Mojang's guidelines also ask that fan work never looks official, so keep the real logo out of your own branding.
The font on Bedrock Edition
Bedrock Edition uses the same pixel font for most text. It adds Noto Sans for longer passages and Minecraft Ten for some menu headings, and its chat settings can switch chat messages and captions between Mojangles and Noto Sans.
Minecraft font download: fan-made fonts
These are the best-known recreations. None of them is made or approved by Mojang. Check the licence before you use one in something you sell.
| Font | Style | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Monocraft by Idrees Hassan | In-game text, monospaced (every letter the same width). Used by the generator above. | SIL Open Font License 1.1: free for any use, including commercial work. Only selling the font by itself is not allowed. |
| Minecraftia by Andrew Tyler | In-game text, as a bitmap font. | Free for personal use. Commercial use, including apps, needs a paid licence from the author. |
| Minecraft by Craftron Gaming | In-game text, as a bitmap font. | Listed on DaFont as “100% Free”. |
| MineCrafter by Madpixel Designs | Logo-style lettering inspired by the Minecraft logo, with a cracked version. | Listed on DaFont as donationware. |
DaFont says its licence labels are only an indication: the full terms are in the readme inside each download. Monocraft has the clearest licence of the four, which is why this site uses it.

How to use the Minecraft font
- Photoshop, GIMP, Word: unzip the TTF download, open a
.ttffile and click Install. Restart the app and pick Monocraft from its font list. Sizes that are a multiple of 9 px (9, 18, 27…) keep every pixel sharp. - Canva: uploading your own font needs a paid Canva plan. On the free plan, download the PNG above and add it as an image.
- Google Docs and Slides: these only offer Google's own font list, so a downloaded font cannot be added. Insert the PNG as an image instead.
- YouTube thumbnails and Discord: use the transparent PNG. A pixel size of 8 or more reads well on a thumbnail; Copy image pastes it straight into Discord.
- Inside Minecraft: chat, signs, books and item names already use the font. Colour them with Minecraft color codes, fade hex colours across a nickname with the gradient generator, or style your server list message with the MOTD generator.
Generator settings
- Drop shadow: the game's shadow, one font pixel down and right, in the same colour at a quarter of the brightness.
- Bold: works like the game's §l bold, drawing every letter a second time one pixel to the right.
- Game spacing: each letter takes only its own width, so i, l and ! sit closer together, as in chat. Monospace gives every letter the same width.
- Pixel size: how many image pixels each font pixel becomes. At 1 the PNG is the size the game draws at GUI scale 1.
Minecraft font questions
What font does Minecraft use?
Its own pixel font, built into the game. The Minecraft Wiki calls it Mojangles, or Minecraft Seven. Mojang does not offer it as a download, so fan-made fonts such as Monocraft and Minecraftia recreate it.
Is the Minecraft font free?
The game's own font cannot be downloaded, but recreations can: Monocraft is free for any use under the SIL Open Font License, and Minecraftia is free for personal use. The generator on this page is free as well.
Can I use the Minecraft font commercially?
Monocraft allows commercial use as long as you do not sell the font file itself. Minecraftia needs a paid licence for commercial work. Whatever the font, Mojang's usage guidelines ask that your work never looks official.
What is the Minecraft logo font?
The logo is custom lettering, not a font you can type with. MineCrafter by Madpixel Designs is a fan font inspired by it (donationware on DaFont), and the Minecraft text generator makes 3D logo-style text as a PNG.
How do I type in the Minecraft font?
In game you already do: chat, signs and books use it. Anywhere else, install a recreation such as Monocraft and pick it from your app's font list, or type in the generator above and paste the image.
Does Bedrock use a different font?
Mostly not. Bedrock draws most text in the same pixel font, uses Noto Sans for longer text and Minecraft Ten for some menu headings, and can switch chat to Noto Sans in the chat settings.
Is the generator the exact in-game font?
Close, but not pixel for pixel. It draws with Monocraft, which follows the game's pixel grid but gives thin letters such as i and l small tails. The shadow, bold and spacing follow the game's own rules.
Can I use the images on YouTube or Discord?
Yes. The PNG is made in your browser from your own text, and Monocraft's licence allows images made with it, including commercial ones. Just do not present your artwork as official Minecraft branding.
