Minecraft Skin Grabber

Type a Java username and grab their skin: front and back renders, the model and cape, and the original PNG to download and wear.

Grab a player’s skin

Enter a Java username or UUID. The skin comes straight from Mojang, with renders, the model and the cape.

How to grab a Minecraft skin

  1. Enter the player’s Java name or UUID

Names are not case sensitive. A UUID works too, with or without dashes, and still finds the player after they rename.

  2. Check the renders and the model

The front and back renders show the skin the way other players see it. Note whether it is Classic or Slim: you need the same model when you upload it.

  3. Download the skin PNG

This is the original 64×64 file from Mojang’s skin server, ready to upload or open in a skin editor. The render buttons save the front and back pictures instead.

How to use a skin in Java Edition

  1. Open the Skins tab

In the Minecraft Launcher, choose Minecraft: Java Edition on the left, then Skins at the top.

  2. Add a new skin

Choose New skin, give it a name and pick the arm style: Classic or Slim, the same as the grabber showed.

  3. Browse to the PNG and save

Select the file you downloaded and choose Save & Use. Other players see it the next time you join a server.

How to use a skin in Bedrock Edition

Java skin files work in Bedrock too. Open Dressing Room from the main menu, go to the classic skins section, choose Import and then Choose New Skin, and select the PNG. When Bedrock asks, pick the same arm style as the grabber showed.

Importing needs a device with files

You can import a PNG skin on Windows, Android and iOS. Consoles have no way to pick a file, so on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch you are limited to the Character Creator and Marketplace skins.

What is inside a Minecraft skin file

A skin is a 64×64 PNG laid out like a flattened paper model. Each body part has a base layer, and a second layer drawn slightly outside it for hats, jackets, sleeves and trousers. Transparent pixels in the second layer let the base show through; the base layer itself is always drawn solid.

Head0,0 to 32,1632,0 to 64,16 (hat)
Body16,16 to 40,3216,32 to 40,48 (jacket)
Right arm40,16 to 56,3240,32 to 56,48 (sleeve)
Left arm32,48 to 48,6448,48 to 64,64 (sleeve)
Right leg0,16 to 16,320,32 to 16,48 (trousers)
Left leg16,48 to 32,640,48 to 16,64 (trousers)
  • Classic and Slim. Classic arms are 4 pixels wide; Slim arms are 3 pixels wide, leaving an unused column in each arm area.
  • Old 64×32 skins. Skins from before the 1.8 update are half as tall. They have one arm and one leg that the game mirrors for the other side, and only the head has a second layer.
  • Right and left. “Right arm” means the player’s right, which is on your left when you face them.

Skin grabber not finding someone?

  • They play Bedrock. Only Java accounts have skins on Mojang’s skin server. A Bedrock gamertag can’t be grabbed.
  • They renamed. Old names stop working after a name change. Search their UUID, or find it with the UUID lookup if you know it from a server’s files.
  • They use a default skin. Accounts that never uploaded a skin show the built-in default, and there is nothing to download.
  • The name is a cracked-server name. Players on offline-mode servers may not own a Java account at all, so there is no skin on record.

Heads, UUIDs and names

Want the player’s face as a block? The player head generator writes the /give command for your version. Need the permanent ID for a whitelist or plugin? Use the UUID lookup. Looking for a name of your own? Try the name checker.

To build a player’s skin in blocks, save the front render and load it into the pixel art generator, which turns it into a block-by-block plan with a count of every block.

Skin grabber questions

Is it OK to use a Minecraft skin stealer?

Yes. Every Java player’s current skin is public on Mojang’s skin server, which is how everyone in a game sees it, and wearing the same skin as someone else is allowed. Just don’t use it to pretend to be that player, and credit the artist if you share a skin someone made.

Can I grab a Bedrock player’s skin?

No. Only Java Edition skins are stored with Mojang’s profile service. Bedrock skins live with the player’s Xbox profile or come from Marketplace packs, and there is no public way to download them. If the Bedrock player also owns Java, search their Java name instead.

Why does the grabber say the player has no custom skin?

The account has never uploaded a skin, so the game gives it one of the built-in default skins such as Steve or Alex. There is no file to download in that case; the defaults are already in your game.

Should I pick Classic or Slim when I upload the skin?

Pick the model the grabber shows. Classic (Steve) arms are 4 pixels wide and Slim (Alex) arms are 3 pixels wide. With the wrong model the arms get a stripe of stretched or missing pixels.

I changed my skin but the grabber still shows the old one. Why?

Lookups are cached for about ten minutes to keep within Mojang’s limits, and Mojang’s own servers can take a few minutes to update. Try again a little later.

Can I get a player’s old skins?

Not from Mojang. Its API only returns the skin a player is wearing right now. Skin history sites only know skins they happened to record in the past.

Can I use the cape too?

No. Capes belong to the account (they come from Minecon, promotions and other official events) and can’t be uploaded. The grabber shows the cape so you can see the player’s full look, but only the skin can be copied.
