Minecraft server icon size and format

A Java Edition server icon must be a 64×64 pixel PNG named server-icon.png. The server reads it when it starts and sends it with every server list ping, and the game draws it beside your server in the multiplayer list. A file of any other size is ignored, and players see the default grey pack image instead.

• Size: exactly 64 by 64 pixels.
• Format: a real PNG. Renaming a JPG or WebP to .png does not convert it.
• Name: server-icon.png, all lower case.
• Transparency: allowed. Transparent pixels show the list background.

Server icon converter: use your own image

Already have a logo? Switch to Use an image and choose, drop or paste it. The maker crops the largest centred square; zoom and drag the big preview to pick the part you want. Photos look best with smooth resizing, while pixel art and logos with hard edges stay crisp with sharp resizing. If your file is already a 64×64 PNG, the maker tells you, and you can use it as it is.

How to add a server icon to your Minecraft server

1. Download server-icon.png

   Make your icon above and download it. The file is already the right size, format and name.

2. Put it in the server's main folder

   Upload it to the same folder as server.properties and the server jar, not into plugins, mods or the world folder. On a hosting panel this is the top folder of the file manager.

3. Restart the server

   The icon is only loaded at startup, so a reload command is not enough. Stop and start the server.

4. Refresh the server list

   In Minecraft, press Refresh on the multiplayer screen. The new icon appears once the list pings the server again.

Why your server icon isn't showing

• Wrong size. Anything but 64×64 is skipped. Download a fresh copy from this page.
• Not really a PNG. A JPG with a .png name fails. Save it as PNG from an editor, or use this maker.
• Double extension. Windows hides extensions, so a file can end up as server-icon.png.png. Turn on file name extensions in File Explorer to check.
• Wrong folder. It must sit next to server.properties.
• No restart. The server only reads the icon when it starts.
• A proxy in front. If you run BungeeCord or Velocity, players reach the proxy first, so put the icon in the proxy's folder too. Server list plugins can also replace the icon with their own, so check their settings.

Server icons on Bedrock Edition

Custom server icons are a Java Edition feature. Bedrock Dedicated Server has no icon setting, so plan on Bedrock players not seeing your icon, and put your name and a short pitch in the MOTD instead. The artwork on Bedrock's featured servers is arranged with Mojang rather than set from a server file. If Bedrock players join through Geyser, Java players still see your icon as normal.

Tips for an icon players notice

• Players usually see the icon at 32 or 64 screen pixels, so check the small previews above. One or two letters, or one bold shape, beats a detailed logo.
• Use a background colour that stands out against the dark list, and keep the edges clear so nothing important is cut off.
• Pair it with a message of the day that says what your server is about in a few words.
