How many people play Minecraft?
The most recent monthly player figure Mojang has published is more than 141 million monthly active users, measured in August 2021. Sales have kept climbing since: over 300 million copies by October 2023, and over 350 million by April 2025, which makes Minecraft the best-selling video game of all time.

Copies sold is not the same as people playing: one person can own the game on several devices, and many buyers no longer play. Monthly active users is the better measure of how many people play, but we have not found a newer official monthly figure from Mojang or Microsoft.
How many people are playing Minecraft right now?
Microsoft does not publish a live count. The closest thing anyone can measure is public multiplayer: right now 516,882 players are online across 7,947 of the 10,906 servers we track. Most people play in singleplayer worlds, on Realms or on private servers, so the real number playing at any moment is far higher.
A sudden drop across many servers at once usually means a problem with Minecraft itself, such as sign-in failing. Check whether Minecraft is down to confirm.
How we count players
Every server is checked every 10 minutes
We ask each server in our directory for its status, the same request the multiplayer menu makes, and record the player count it reports.
Only fresh, online results count
The live total adds up the latest count from each server that answered in the last hour. Offline servers count as zero.
Each server is counted once
Networks with separate Java and Bedrock addresses often share one player pool, so only the main address counts.
Counts are what each server reports. A few servers inflate or cap their numbers, and we cannot verify them. To check a single server that is not in our list, use the Minecraft server status checker.
Why other player counters show bigger numbers
Sites that show a “live” Minecraft player count of tens of millions are not measuring anything live. They estimate from old official figures, app store data and models, then add a moving number. Ours is smaller because it is only what we can actually observe: real players on real servers, updated every few minutes.

How is this player count calculated?
We check every server in our directory about every 10 minutes and read the player count it reports, the same number you see in the multiplayer menu. The live total adds up the latest count from each server that was online in the last hour. Each server is counted once, even if it has separate Java and Bedrock addresses.
Why is the live number so much lower than Minecraft’s total players?
Most Minecraft is played in singleplayer worlds, on Realms, on LAN or on private servers, none of which report to anyone. The live total only covers public servers in our directory, so it shows how busy public multiplayer is, not how many people play the game.

Can I see the player count for one server?
Yes. Every server page on NewMinecraftServers shows its latest player count, and its Stats tab charts players over time. For a server that is not listed, the Minecraft server status checker shows its current player count.
